The East Hampshire village and civil parish of Horndean is located 13 kilometres north of the naval city of Portsmouth. It staged a two day race meeting from Tuesday 7th to Wednesday 8th July 1818 across farmland on the edge of the village. On the opening day the Weight for Age Handicap over 2 miles saw Colonel Graves’ Brush beat Marksman and Sidrophel, while the 2 mile Sweepstake was won by Captain Moore’s Romp who defeated King Corney. The next day opened with a mile Handicap in which Marksman gained compensation by beating Sir Christopher and Sidrophel. Given that the meeting was well run and had good support, it is surprising that there were no further meetings in the village. |
